Scream Queen Feature On: Linnea Quigley

                         Scream Queen Feature: LINNEA QUIGLEY
Linnea Barbara Quigley was born on May 27, 1958 in Davenport, Iowa. She is a model, author, singer, producer, and most well known as an actress. She has been given the nickname "Queen of the B's" for her long career in b-movies. She is also a well known Scream Queen as much of her filmography consists of horror films.

Linnea moved to California in the 70's where she worked at a health spa. While there, her friends encouraged her to pursue modeling. It was around this time that she began taking acting classes and guitar lessons. She appeared as an extra in several films before landing her first acting role in the Charles Band produced "Fairy Tales" in 1978. Her first big role was in 1981's slasher film Graduation Day. She followed that up with Savage Streets co-starring fellow Scream Queen Linda Blair and the highly controversial slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Her status as a horror icon was cemented in 1985 when she took on the role of "Trash" in the cult classic zombie horror film "The Return of the Living Dead". Throughout the rest of the 80's she appeared in several low budget horror films and also starred in the first two Vice Academy comedy films.

Linnea also sings and plays guitar. She formed a band called The Skirts in the early 80's. She has also written three books, two of them autobiographical about her life as a horror icon.

I love the spirit that Linnea brings to all of her roles. She's a joy to watch on screen. She has an obvious love for what she does that shines through in every performance. Her personality comes through in every photo you see of her. She's relatable to me in that she was very shy when she was younger, her words: "I was so shy. I didn't move my mouth, didn't sing in glee club or anything like that, didn't do any plays. I was terribly, terribly shy".

I've always been that way myself but yet I've always had this wild urge to break free of it. I've always felt that I'm a very different person inside than what I've shown the world on the outside. Linnea has shown that it is possible to break free and show the world your true self without hesitation and with unflinching spirit and ferocity. She's a special presence in horror and is 100% deserving of her icon status.

Hail To The King, Baby...

        Spotlight On: Groovy Bruce...aka...BRUCE CAMPBELL....aka...The                     King...aka...One-Armed Chainsaw-Wielding Bad-Ass...AKA THE CHIN

This post is very special. I LOVE Bruce Campbell. LOVE. I'm a huge fan of his. So much so that I named my baby, my schnauzer boy, Bruce. I had that name picked out 3 months before I even got him. As soon as I saw him I knew he was a perfect Bruce. I even dressed him in an Army of Darkness t-shirt for his namesake's birthday this year. Bruce Campbell's birthday is an event at my house and I'm not the only one who feels that way. I have made Bruce Campbell fan friends on twitter, facebook, and pinterest. We all celebrate by posting pics like mine, writing messages, drawing or painting portraits of our king, and some even make amazing looking cakes in honor of Groovy Bruce.

A little background on Mr. Campbell before delving into my favorite roles and favorite things about Ash himself. Born Bruce Lorne Campbell in Royal Oak, Michigan on June 22, 1958, he is the younger of two brothers and also has an older half brother. He got into acting as a teenager and around that time started making Super 8 movies with friends including Sam Raimi. After high school he attended Western Michigan University where he continued to work on his acting career. He and Sam Raimi also continued working together, collaborating on a 30 minute Super 8 version of what would become the first Evil Dead film - Within the Woods.

Bruce has had a long career since his beginnings making home movies with high school friends. The original Evil Dead premiered in 1981 to rave reviews including an endorsement by none other than the King of horror himself Stephen King. He has appeared in many horror and sci-fi b-movies including Crimewave, Moontrap, and Maniac Cop, more mainstream films like Congo, Escape from L.A., and Sam Raimi's Spiderman franchise, leading roles in tv series like Burn Notice, Brisco County Jr., and Jack of All Trades, and has also done voice acting. He wrote his autobiography which was published in 2002 - "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor" - which is terrific and so funny. He also wrote an original novel called Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way which was released in 2005. Currently, he's working on the Ash vs. Evil Dead tv series, hosting a horror themed game show, and has started hosting his own horror convention in Chicago.

I love Bruce for more than his roles in his films. He's a good man in real life. A devoted husband and father. He loves his family, loves his friends, and loves his fans. He has a terrific sense of humor and is so down-to-earth he could be your best friend next door. He works hard and he's my kind of bad-ass. Never caring what the mainstream thinks and totally embracing his b-movie icon status. I love that he's such a nice person. Gotta love his style too. Always stylin'. My favorite role is for sure Ash from the Evil Dead films. Cannot wait for Ash vs. Evil Dead. I really can never say enough great things about Bruce. I'm looking forward to everything he has in store for us. He's at the top of my list of people I'd love to meet. Him and Dave Grohl. If they were in the same room my head would explode!

So, any fellow Dead-ites reading, I'm sure you're already following Groovy Bruce on twitter. Anyone who isn't ... follow him here: https://twitter.com/GroovyBruce Always fun!! There's also a fun Ash4President campaign going on! Do your duty and vote you primitive screwheads!

P.S. I have to leave this here - the promo for Bruce's appearance on The X-Files!!! One of my favorites!!!

P.S.S. Foo Fighters video for "Everlong" inspired by Evil Dead!! WOOT.

And, as always, thanks for reading! xoxo, Spooky Steph

         Always stylin'!!!

I Love My Horror Family aka Horror Shout-Outs Part 1

One of the things I love so much about horror is the camaraderie between the fans. Being a horror fan is like being a member of this odd and off-the-wall yet tight knit community. Since I've become active in horror forums, horror groups on facebook, and on twitter...let's just say, I've never dreamed of having so many friends. As someone who was outcast and bullied from an early age, I've always felt out of place pretty much everywhere. I've loved the scary stuff since I was young but not until I started meeting fellow fans on-line did I finally feel like I found "my people" so to speak, I finally felt accepted. Horror fans are some of the nicest, most down to earth, and friendliest people. We're all geeks. We all have a love of something that non fans shake their heads at. This is a dedicated group. The horror conventions can attest to this. You don't see conventions like this for any other genres with the sole exception of science fiction. I love to help my fellow fans promote their personal works. I also love promoting the work of the people I myself am a fan of. Sometimes these things overlap. I'd like to use this post to promote some of my favorite sites and blogs...

#1. a SLASH above

This site is dedicated to the slasher sub-genre. I've spoken before about my love for these movies and the comprehensiveness of this site is astounding. I've found so many movies through this site that I had never heard of before. This is a must for slasher fans.

#2. Found Footage Critic

Okay, so, even as a horror fan the words "I love found footage" are hard to say to other fans. Found footage is a very polarizing sub-genre. I've been a big fan of these movies since seeing Paranormal Activity. I'm a big fan of that franchise. I've even got a shirt and a poster for the original. Found footage, just like the slasher genre, has it's big name movies and it's obscure titles. It's got the agreed upon must-sees like the controversial and graphic Cannibal Holocaust and the film the brought the genre into the big time, The Blair Witch Project. It's also got it's agreed upon duds like the aforementioned Paranormal Activity's various sequels (which I am again not afraid to admit again that I still love). This site is for found footage what a SLASH above is for slashers. Very comprehensive and run by people who really love the genre.  A must for found footage buffs.

#3 Fright-Rags

My love of horror can only be rivaled by my love of t-shirts. I love t-shirts so much that a goal of mine is to someday start my own web store and print my own. I know, though, that my future shirts will never be as amazing as those that are produced by fright rags. These shirts are amazing. I own several and will continue to be a customer. They have their own artists so all of their designs are 100% original. Their designs are expertly printed on super soft shirts in a few different styles. They post new designs all the time and they also have a graveyard section where you can vote to bring older designs back. Highly recommended!!

http://www.fright-rags.com/

They are also on twitter so give them a shout-out! https://twitter.com/frightrags

#4 Rabbit in Red

Another horror tee site and this one is based in the UK. I was directed to this site by a twitter friend after I asked if anyone knew where I could find a shirt for The House on Sorority Row. This site has an amazing selection of designs of available. A lot of the designs are poster prints and you have the option of how aged you want your shirt to look. The more aged you ask it to be the more destroyed and vintage the print looks. They do the aging by hand. Because they are in the UK if you order from the US it does take a while to get your shirt but it is so worth it. I got the light aging on my House on Sorority Row tee and I love it so much. Check this out:
That little circle on the sleeve is the rabbit in red logo. 100% authentic. 100% terrorific. Like fright rags, they are highly recommended!!

#5 Adrian Roe's First Scream To The Last
Aside from movies I also love books. I also love books about movies. Adrian Roe has written a book I think every fan of 80's horror will love. First Scream To The Last: The Definitive Guide to 80's Horror is a thorough, fast paced, and entertaining read. It's packed with info and insight into the decade most often considered to be the genre's golden era. This book also includes fun and informative interviews with Tom Holland, Felissa Rose, Adrienne Barbeau, the late and forever great Wes Craven, and a really cool and unexpected talk with Eileen Davidson about the filming of House on Sorority Row. I recommend this book whenever I can to friends and in horror groups. You can get a copy on amazon and check in with the author, Adrian Roe, on twitter. Roe is currently working on the follow-up, The Definitive Guide to 90's Horror.

That concludes part 1 of my horror shout-outs. I really do love my horror family and always want to help promote the work of fellow fans and my favorite filmmakers. I'd like this to be a continuing series on my blog so check back for more shout-outs in the future. Thanks so much for reading and if you get the chance to check anyone out on this list I'd appreciate it and I know they would too!! xoxo, Spooky Steph

Movie To Watch Out For: All Through The House

One of my favorite sub-genres of horror is the slasher film. I love slashers. I also love Scream Queen Jessica Cameron. She is making a name for herself in the horror world and one of her upcoming films is a Christmas centered slasher film called All Through The House. This is one of several recent and upcoming 80's style throwback slasher films being released lately.

Slasher movies have a huge fanbase. Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, and Friday the 13th all have large franchises and millions of fans. Not to mention movies like The Burning, The House on Sorority Row, The Slumber Party Massacre, Prom Night, and the Sleepaway Camp series which all have devoted fans. There have been dozens of slashers made and even the most obscure have dedicated fans. It's really no surprise that today's young horror filmmakers are creating their own takes on the genre and giving us slashers set in the present and throwback slashers set in the 80's. Bloody Homecoming, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, and the newly released Lost After Dark starring Robert Patrick are 3 of my favorites. I'm also looking forward to the soon to be released Kristy, Girl House, and The Scarehouse.

All Through The House is set in Napa California where 15 years ago a young girl named Jamie Garrett was taken from her room around Christmastime and was never seen again. Now, college student Rachel Kimmel is home from college for Christmas break when terror strikes the town again. Someone hiding behind a Santa Claus mask is terrorizing the town and Rachel herself comes face to face with the horrific secret behind the mask.

Sounds like something for slasher fans to look forward to. With a terrific crew including actresses Jessica Cameron and Ashley Mary Nunes plus writer and director Todd Nunes we're going to be in for a treat. Please check out the imdb page for the full cast and crew here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4278962/

Spotlight On: Linda Blair

                                         Actor Spotlight: Linda Blair

Today's post focuses on legendary horror star Linda Blair. She's a bonafide b-movie legend and scream queen. Still most famous for her role as Regan in what is widely considered to be the scariest film of all time, The Exorcist.

Blair was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 22, 1959. She grew up in Westport, Connecticut. Her career started at the age of 6 as a child model. Her first acting role was on the short run Daytime Soap Opera Hidden Faces from 1968-1969. She was selected from over 600 applicants to play Regan in The Exorcist. For this role she won a Golden Globe and a People Choice Award. She was also nominated for an Academy Award. Awards like this, even in the 70's, were rarely given to horror films. She reprised the role of Regan in The Exorcist II: The Heretic in 1977. The film was received poorly but gained Blair another award, a Saturn Award for Best Actress in 1988.
Between the two Exorcist films she appeared as the lead in the highly controversial television film Born Innocent in 1974. The same year she appeared in Airport 1975. The following year she was in two more television movies; Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic and Sweet Hostage opposite Martin Sheen. In 1978 she took the lead role in the Wes Craven directed tv horror Summer of Fear.
In 1979, she starred in the film Roller Boogie. Throughout the 80's Blair appeared in numerous successful low budget b-movies, mostly horror and exploitation, including Savage Streets with Linnea Quigley, Chained Heat, Hell Night, Savage Island, Grotesque, Witchery, & more.

Since the 80's she's made guest appearances in films and television, including Wes Craven's Scream and Supernatural. She also hosted the series Scariest Places On
Earth and appeared on Celebrity Ghost Stories.

Blair has had a long and memorable career in horror and will remain a legend in horror history for her role in The Exorcist. She is also an advocate for animal and human welfare. She has her own foundation, the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation which you can check out here: http://www.lindablairworldheart.org/
